3DP4ME: Helping Children to Walk, Move, and Hear

At DELRAY Systems, we believe innovation has the power to transform lives. That’s why we’re proud to shine this month’s Delray Difference spotlight on 3DP4ME, a U.S.-based nonprofit that empowers children to walk, move, and hear with 3D printed prostheses and hearing aids.

Jason Szolomayer, founder of 3DP4ME, is using 3D printing technology to bring hope and healing to children in the Middle East. According to their website (www.3dp4me.org) and an article by 3DPrinting.com (2023), Szolomayer’s journey began through his humanitarian work in Jordan, where he observed a critical need for hearing assistance among children and recognized 3D printing as a solution.

The Hearing Express: The Gift of Custom Hearing Aids

Hearing loss is one of the most overlooked challenges in developing regions. According to the World Health Organization, fewer than 3% of people in developing countries who need a hearing aid actually have one.

3DP4ME is working to close that gap through The Hearing Express, an innovative program delivering custom 3D printed hearing aids to children in need. 3DP4ME uses a mobile 3D scanner to create precise ear moldings for each child. The process takes just two minutes and ensures a perfect fit for the hearing aid. 

In addition to the hearing aids, each child receives speech therapy sessions, enabling them to better engage in school and make developmental progress.

Nearly two years after launching their initial pilot in Jordan, 48 out of 52 children are thriving, wearing their hearing aids daily, and participating more actively both in school and at home. Recently, 3DP4ME hosted a Hearing Express Party to celebrate the children and their families. Their social media platform shows a joyful gathering filled with smiles, laughter, and gratitude.

A Story of Impact: Meet Toleen

On the 3DP4ME website, you can read testimonials of children who were positively impacted by 3D printing technology. Toleen is a 12-year-old, sixth grade girl from Jordan who loves to draw. As a child with hearing loss, she struggled to keep up with schoolwork and found it difficult to communicate with classmates.

Thanks to her new 3D printed hearing aids and support from 3DP4ME, Toleen is now completing her schoolwork more independently, and her social interactions have improved. She’s making steady progress and gaining confidence with her improved ability to communicate. Her dream for the future? To one day help other children with hearing loss.

Step by Step: Helping Kids Walk Again

Building on their success with hearing aid delivery, 3DP4ME launched the Step by Step Project, which provides custom 3D printed lower-limb prosthetics along with physical therapy and psychological support. This project plan provides a comprehensive, compassionate care model for mobility.

The project began with a successful pilot in Jordan, where five children received custom-designed prosthetic limbs. Each child also received individualized support and physical therapy. This helped to ensure they not only learned to walk again but also felt empowered every step of the way.

Now, 3DP4ME is preparing to launch a new pilot in southern Syria, aiming to deliver prosthetics to more children in need. Their long-term goal is to scale operations to reach even more young people affected by conflict in the area.

In one of the most challenging humanitarian settings, 3DP4ME is also planning a pilot in Gaza, where the need is especially urgent. It’s estimated that between 3,000 and 5,000 individuals require prosthetic solutions, yet many rehabilitation clinics have been destroyed. It is reported that only nine trained prosthetists remain in the area. This pilot project could be lifechanging for children and families affected by displacement, conflict, and limb loss.

With each new initiative, 3DP4ME continues to prove that 3D printing can do more than make products, it can restore hope to young children.

This past week I had the opportunity to attend my first trade show, RAPID+TCT, with a few of my colleagues from DELRAY Systems. And the best part? It was right here in Detroit.

Though my career began as a school psychologist, I’ve always had a passion for innovation and creativity. Over the years, that passion evolved into an interest in 3D printing. What started as a hobby has grown into a new professional direction, and attending RAPID+TCT felt like a milestone moment in my career journey.

Walking into Huntington Place and seeing the scale of the event, feeling the energy in the room, and connecting with others in the industry was amazing. Here are my top 5 takeaways from the event:

1. RAPID+TCT is a Massive Event with Something for Everyone

I heard RAPID+TCT was a big event but I didn’t fully understand until I was there in person. The show floor was buzzing with excitement and packed with people from all corners of the additive manufacturing world. There were aisles of exhibitors showcasing the latest in 3D printing, materials, software, and applications. 

The booths were interactive, and there was a little something for everyone. The RAPID+TCT event sparked my interest and imagination. I made a mental "to print" list as I explored the creative 3D printed samples. Whether you were there to check out the latest machines, ask technical questions, or just marvel at the printed parts on display, you could easily spend hours (or days) exploring and learning something new. 

2. 3D Printing Technology Is Advancing Fast — and It’s Fascinating

There’s no doubt about it, the world of 3D printing is evolving at lightning speed. The most exciting part for me at RAPID+TCT was seeing what’s next in the world of 3D printing. I was amazed by the new machines, cutting-edge materials, and clever applications being introduced across the show floor. 

One fascinating machine that caught my attention was from RLP (Rapid Liquid Paint). RLP uses reduced gravity manufacturing, a system capable of printing silicone in gel using a gravity free process. Sitting on the bench in the booth, that was cushioned with printed RLP material, and watching the machine work was mesmerizing. 

3. It was Engaging and Fun

Yes, it’s a trade show, but RAPID+TCT had booths that kept things engaging and super fun. One of my personal favorite booths was Polymaker. They had competitive, interactive games that let you earn Polymaker coins (3D printed, of course!), which you could then exchange for awesome little 3D printed prizes. I walked away with some fidget toys for my kids and a new planter for my desk. 

I also enjoyed the Bambu Lab booth with interactive 3D printed remote control cars. I used the remote to operate a toy forklift around in a miniature 3D printed world. 

I must not forget to mention the delicious espresso bar by the Cappuccino Man, compliments of EOS. My pistachio latte was a delicious pick-me-up in between booth hopping.


4. Amazing 3D Prints Everywhere You Look

One of the most exciting parts of RAPID+TCT was simply wandering the floor and discovering incredible 3D printed pieces at nearly every turn. From fun and artistic to highly functional, the creativity and precision of the pieces on display were impressive.

A few of my personal favorites? The massive, intricately detailed king at the Photocentric booth stopped me in my tracks. Then there was the Addams Family–inspired “Thing” hand at the Prusa booth. I want the file on that print because it would be a perfect decor piece to add to my Halloween decorations.

And I also have to mention the rock-and-roll-themed prints at Polymaker, including a full 3D printed guitar and rock and roll hand gestures. What a perfect mix of engineering and artistry!

Beyond the eye-catching pieces, there were also tons of impressive, functional parts on display. Everything from industrial grade components to medical models and jewelry prototypes. 


5. Connecting with Industry Innovators

While the machines and prints were impressive, it was the people that made this experience so beneficial. I had the chance to network with incredibly smart, passionate individuals in the industry.

One of the highlights for me was meeting some of DELRAY's partners in real life, including our teams at BigRep and UltiMaker. It was nice to put faces to names and to have real, in-person introductions and conversations. I also had a great experience networking with individuals at 3D Systems, Formlabs and Stratasys, who continue to be strong leaders and innovators in the industry.

Being somewhat new to the world of additive manufacturing, having the chance to be surrounded by other professionals who are so knowledgeable and passionate about the future of this technology was a great experience.

Final Thoughts

Attending RAPID+TCT for the first time reminded me why I fell in love with 3D printing in the first place and why I’m so excited to be a part of this growing industry.

As much as I saw, there was so much more I didn’t get the chance to experience. With many incredible booths and speakers happening at once, it was impossible for me to catch it all.

If it’s anything like RAPID+TCT, I know it’s going to be another exciting and inspiring few days surrounded by innovation and great people.

For individuals who are blind, understanding complex shapes and structures can be a significant challenge. That’s where See3D steps in.

See3D: Bringing the World to Touch

At DELRAY Systems, we believe in the power of 3D printing to change lives. Today, we shine the spotlight on See3D, a nonprofit organization using this technology to make the world more accessible for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

The mission of See3D is to make the world more accessible for blind people. See 3D organizes the printing and distribution of 3D printed models for people who are blind. Their mission is to also spread awareness of the importance of accessible materials and independent living skills for the blind community. Through their advocacy, they work to break down barriers and empower individuals to achieve their goals.

Using 3D printing, See3D creates detailed models of objects, landmarks, and scientific concepts, allowing visually impaired individuals to explore the world through touch. See3D transforms abstract concepts into real, touchable experiences. Examples include a model of a dinosaur fossil for a young student, a topographical map for a landowner, and astronomy models for space camp. 

How See 3D Works 

Anyone who is blind/low vision or is a teacher or parent of someone who is blind, can make a request for a model on the See3Dwebsite. Once a request is received, the organization prints and mails the model to the recipient, ensuring they have access to these valuable learning tools.





The Story Behind See 3D

See3D was founded in 2017 by Caroline Karbowski, whose journey into 3D printing was sparked by her interest in learning braille. According to an interview with 3D Natives (2019), when Caroline was in 6th grade she decided to teach herself braille so she could read in the car without experiencing dizziness. During her studies of learning braille, she came across an article about how 3D printing could be used to create tactile images, allowing individuals who are blind to interpret visual concepts through touch. Inspired by this idea, Caroline began learning more about 3D printing technology to design and produce models, laying the foundation for what would become See3D.

The Impact of See3D

Since its founding in 2017, See3D has distributed over 5,000 models to individuals who are blind and visually impaired. Their impact reaches across all 50 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and American Samoa, and extends internationally to 24 countries and 82 organizations or schools.

Their work has been recognized and supported by 22 organizations that have awarded them grants, funding, or in-kind donations. Additionally, See3D has collaborated with 14 different 3D printing programs dedicated to serving blind and low-vision individuals.

Asiga 3D Printing: Transforming Dental Care with the Rhode Island Mission of Mercy

At Delray Systems, we are committed to partnering with the best companies in 3D printing. We are a proud reseller of Asiga, who has recently showcased the true positive power of 3D printing technology through a remarkable project with the Rhode Island Mission of Mercy (RIMOM). 

This collaboration not only demonstrated the potential of 3D printing technology in the dental industry but also highlighted how it can be used to make a real, tangible difference in the lives of people in need.

A Mission to Provide Free Dental Care

The Rhode Island Mission of Mercy together with ClinicCare Dental held an event designed to offer free dental care to communities in Providence, Rhode Island. For many individuals in this area, access to dental care is limited, and RIMOM provides essential services, including cleanings, extractions, and the fitting of dentures, at no cost to the patients.

This year, Asiga was asked to provide 3D printers to the event, however just providing the technology wasn’t enough. Both Cory Lambertson and Bryce Hiller of Asiga, who both previously worked as dental technicians, stepped in to support the mission.  This project was not just about providing technology—it was about changing lives, restoring smiles, and giving people the confidence they need to improve their quality of life.

How 3D Printing Changed the Game

Asiga’s role at the mission allowed the efficient production of high-quality dentures for over 50 patients. Asiga provided two of the advanced Ultra 3D printers and two Max 2 3D printers, which were used to produce partial dentures quickly and precisely, ensuring that patients would leave the clinic with a smile.

The process began with patients being scanned using the Trios scanner from 3Shape, creating a digital model of their teeth. These scans were sent to ClinicCare Dental’s remote design team, where digital dentures were designed. Once the designs were complete, they were sent to Asiga, where the 3D printing process began. The result - -  custom dentures produced in record time and tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

A Real-World Impact: Changing Lives


One of the most powerful moments during this event came when Jermaine, a patient who had lost his teeth in a tragic car accident, received his new partial denture. Jermaine had been self-conscious about his appearance for years, even feeling embarrassed to smile in front of his children and having difficulties gaining employment.

After receiving his new partial denture, Jermaine’s emotional reaction said it all. For him, this wasn’t just about getting a set of teeth back—it was about regaining his sense of self, his confidence, and his ability to smile freely once again. 

This powerful moment encapsulated why Asiga and its partners do what they do: to improve lives, one smile at a time.
